MY CHRISTMAS STORY

As soon as you got comfortable enough to hang up your clothes, or to sit at the breakfast table, you were gone. Lillian sheltered Jacob for these reasons, seeking out the best candidates possible for the boy. Two days before the Petersons were to take Jacob home, Mrs. Peterson got a call from the doctor. Her cries of rejoice were heard throughout the house. Anne immediately called Lillian Hoback. Lillan was surprised to hear the tearful Mrs. Peterson on the other end of the phone. Jacob's case worker was visibly shaken when she hung up the receiver. With tears in her eyes she glanced at the Christmas tree, Mrs. Peterson's words resounding in her ear, "Miss Hoback, isn’t it wonderful? Now Jacob will have a little brother or sister!" Rollins, Coleman top jazz fest lineup

Tenor saxophone icon Sonny Rollins and visionary composer Ornette Coleman -- two of the foremost names in jazz -- will headline the 30th annual Chicago Jazz Festival this August.

In addition, several leading jazz composers have been commissioned to create works to celebrate the 30th anniversary: trumpeter Dave Douglas, pianist Vijay Iyer and bandleaders Gerald Wilson and T.S. Galloway.

As it has for the last few years, Chicago Jazz Festival Week will stretch seven days, Aug. 25-31. The festival is produced by the Mayor's Office of Special Events.

Man who claimed ‘mercy killing’ portrayed as master deceiver

Information presented to a Multnomah County grand jury paints a much different portrait of John L. Roberts than the one that emerged last week.

Roberts, 51, who was indicted Friday in the murder of his wife, Virginia Roberts, was described by some family members as a loving husband who fulfilled his terminally-ill wife's last request by shooting her in the head.

But not everyone supported this image of Roberts. Some warned anonymously on The Outlook's web site and in interviews with a reporter that he is a skilled manipulator, and that his defense was untenable. A "memorandum of law" released on Monday by the Multnomah County district attorney's office concurs.

The memorandum alleges there was no evidence that Virginia Roberts wanted to die. It further alleges that Roberts has engaged in elaborate acts of deceit in the past, that he had drinking and financial problems and that he was an unfaithful husband.

McCain Wins New Hampshire For GOP; Clinton Wins Democratic Race

US POLITICS: New York Senator Hillary Clinton has won the Democratic presidential primary in New Hampshire, while Arizona Senator John McCain emerged as the winner for the Republicans Clinton's narrow victory Tuesday came a week after she finished in third place in the Iowa caucuses, well behind Illinois Senator Barack Obama. In her victory speech, the New York senator and former first lady said she was ready to give America "the kind of comeback New Hampshire has just given me."

Mickey Kaus

Had she entered in August or September, the surge would have run its course successfully or not. The Iran issue would be that much further along. Pandemic flu would have hit or not hit. Etc. By announcing early, she brought into play a hundred unnecessary variables.

In a nutshell, her challenge is (a) herself, (b) her vote on the War (and her bizarre accounting for same), (c) her husband (never very popular with the party's left wing and a wild card every day), (d) the whole Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton can-we-ever-get-out-of-this-movie thing, (e) Hillaryland (consultants turning everything to hectoring mush), (f) deep-seated fear among Democrats that she is, in truth, the least electable candidate they have.

Geffen, a long-time ally, addressed a, b, c, d, e and f. The Clinton campaign, by responding the way it did, amplified his remarks at least twofold.
